Just this morning, Jerome Balinton of Inquirer.net reported that there is a plan to construct 14-meter letters forming the word BATANGAS on Taal Volcano. To quote:

The provincial council approved on October 5 a resolution supporting the idea of Governor Vilma Santos-Recto, the award-winning actress, to erect a hard-to-miss landmark and potential tourism draw, according to Vice Governor Mark Leviste II.
Emelie Katigbak, officer in charge of the Batangas tourism office, said floating restaurants or fish pens can be set up on Taal Lake in such a way that their layout would form the famous Batangueño expression Ala Eh….
Leviste said the signage would help establish the identity of the lake and volcano as part of Batangas—and not of Tagaytay City, which lies within the neighboring province of Cavite.
He said the volcano was often mistakenly identified as part of Tagaytay, a mountain resort city which offers a picturesque view of Taal.
While some liked the idea for a tourism draw, others are against it because it could ruin the natural beauty of the landscape. What are your thoughts on this issue?
Hindi na kailangan pang dagdagan o gawan pa ng pagbabago ang Taal kasi simula’t sapul marami na ang tumangkilik at namangha sa napakagandang lugar na ito. Nakilala na din siya hindi lamang sa Pilipinas kundi sa buong mundo dahil sa natural na kagandahang hatid nito hindi na kailangang dagdagan pa ng kung ano pa ito bagkus panatiliing malinis, malayo sa kapahamakan at mas productive pa ang naturang lugar sa ganung paraan mas lalo pa itong makikilala sa buong mundo.
Tsaka ‘wag naman sana tayong maging manggagaya meron na sa iba niyan bakit kailangan pa nating gayahin ang ideya ng iba kung tayo naman ay mayroon sariling kakayahan at ideya. Sa halip ang pondong ilalaan sa proposal na ito ay gamitin na lang natin sa mas magaganda at wise na gawain upang lalo pa itong mapaganda at hindi sa kung anu-ano pa mang mga bagay na hindi kaaya-aya sa iba. Maging ORIGINAL sana tayo at wag palaging gumaya sa mga bagay na nakikita natin sa iba.

I’m a tourist and know lots of american tourist. Taal is beautiful but people around it, aren’t honest and very poor.The area is very environmentally damage. The horses are abuse by walking on a very hard horrible path, lifting heavy people on a hot weather to the top.They wont give the horses water unless the tourists pay for it.We were very dissapointed and will never go back again nor suggest to friends till they environmentally improve it and improve the management.
Big billboard is not attractive at all and it will ruin the natural beauty of volcano. Tourist travel for natural beauty. Instead spending money for billboard, I suggest to spend the money on creating a natural looking path through the mouth of volcano. And patching with trees the bald part of the area, it’s ugly. I’m sure people will like it and brag. Hollywood attract tourist because of stars not because of billboard.

This is an appeal to Governor Santos, Vice Governor Liveste and the members of the Provincial Council of Batangas:
This proposal is not a good idea at all. It will add nothing positive to the image of Batangas but would rather ruin the natural beauty of what has been acclaimed to be one of 10 MOST BEAUTIFUL LAKES IN THE WORLD – a very rare recognition given to our beloved country. And to be located in our home province is an added bonus that makes all true-blooded Batanggenyos very proud of our heritage. Taal Lake is already being polluted as it is as evidenced by the recent two large fishkills caused by the mis-managed tilapia fish farming. It would be much better if the budget allocated for this proposal will be allocated for scientific monitoring of fish farming in the area, or as one commentator suggested, build better footpaths to the volcano – that may boost tourism and not the sign as the Vice-Governor is laughably suggesting.
To all of the Batangas government officials who were voted into power as a show of trust of your constituents: We appeal to you. Please look into your hearts and conscience and show your REAL LOVE AND CARE to your home province and kababayans by stopping this project. Thank you.
kalokohan lang yan… dapat siguro sa opisina sa kapitolyo sya maglalage at baka may maayos naman na maiisip at nang hindi puro pagaartista..

it is not necessary to put a large sign in a beautiful nature built stracture, it will just cover up the beauty of taal volcano.
tourist came for the beauty of the volcano not the beauty of the sign.
