Hollywood-Inspired BATANGAS Sign on Taal Volcano

Just this morning,  of Inquirer.net reported that there is a plan to construct 14-meter letters forming the word BATANGAS on Taal Volcano. To quote:

The provincial council approved on October 5 a resolution supporting the idea of Governor Vilma Santos-Recto, the award-winning actress, to erect a hard-to-miss landmark and potential tourism draw, according to Vice Governor Mark Leviste II.

Emelie Katigbak, officer in charge of the Batangas tourism office, said floating restaurants or fish pens can be set up on Taal Lake in such a way that their layout would form the famous Batangueño expression Ala Eh….

Leviste said the signage would help establish the identity of the lake and volcano as part of Batangas—and not of Tagaytay City, which lies within the neighboring province of Cavite.

He said the volcano was often mistakenly identified as part of Tagaytay, a mountain resort city which offers a picturesque view of Taal.

While some liked the idea for a tourism draw, others are against it because it could ruin the natural beauty of the landscape. What are your thoughts on this issue?

Pilipinas Got Talent Grand Champion Jovit Baldivino must be feeling ecstatic right now as his debut album “Faithfully” has just turned GOLD. He was awarded the GOLD record award on ASAP XV yesterday, August 15, 2010.

Congratulations, fellow Batangueno! Here’s hoping for a lasting career!

Oil Spill in Calatagan, Batangas

Last February, a chemical spill off the shore of Bauan, Batangas killed three persons and caused the evacuation of some 2000 residents. And now, something similar happened. This time, in Barangay Talibayog in Calatagan.

According to an ABS-CBN report, the shores of Brgy. Talibayog has been covered in black sheen and marred by an oil spill since July 4, Sunday. Barangay Captain Rodrigo De Jesus said that it must have come from cargo vessels passing by. De Jesus also claimed that it had always been a problem and that they had no idea who was causing this.

Like in most oil spills, residents are having difficulty breathing as soil reeks of oil. It has also affected the livelihood of many, especially of the fishermen living in the barangay. To makes matters worse, according to de Jesus, since the newly planted mangroves absorbed the oil, they will die in a few days.

Yesterday, Manila Bulletin reported that Senator Loren Legarda sought probe of the incident.

Parada ng Lechon sa Balayan

Ala eh, kabayan, ikaw ga’y excited na sa Parada ng Lechon sa Balayan? Ako’y hindi na mapakali dine! Ay kalapit na ng June 24! LOL.

Balayan’s Parada ng Lechon is a religious celebration and is probably the most well-known festival in Batangas. Kudos sa mga taga-Balayan for that. Coinciding with the Feast of St. John the Baptist, dressed-up lechons (roasted pig) are paraded around the town plaza. And then, residents and their guests start digging in on them.
Got any questions about PARADA NG LECHON? Contact the Office of the Mayor (Balayan, Batangas) at (043) 921-7950.

It’s been a difficult week for many of our fellow Batanguenos as PHIVOLCS fears Taal volcano to erupt. Honestly, since I never really had time to watch TV, I didn’t know about this news until the other day. I feel bad for the residents of Talisay and San Nicolas for being forced to leave their homes but they really, really have to as their safety is what that matters now.

Let’s just pray that Taal Volcano will stop being a bitch and calm down.

Here’s an excerpt from an Inquirer.net article published yesterday:

Jovit Baldivino is the First ‘Pilipinas Got Talent’ Grand Winner

Kabayan, Batanguenos got talent talaga!

It’s not enough that one of the judges, comedy queen Ai-Ai Delas Alas is a Batanguena, the grand winner of the first ever Pilipinas Got Talent is also from Batangas. Woohoo! Jovit Baldivino was just an ordinary teenage siomai vendor when he auditioned on the reality show’s Batangas leg. He just found himself a YouTube sensation overnight and is now a multi-millionaire.

As Batanguenos, we’re just so proud of him. :)

Taal Volcano Erupting: FALSE ALARM!

Chief government volcanologist Renato Solidum assured the public that Taal Volcano was not erupting after tourists in Tagaytay reported seeing a fire inside one of the craters. Solidum said that there was no seismic activity monitored that would indicate an impending explosion. -GMANews.tv

Mabuti naman. I was a bit scared when I heard Taal Volcano was erupting and was surprised that PHIVOLCS did not even alarm anyone.

Apparently, no troubling seismic activity was recorded that day so there was nothing to worry about. PHIVOLCS also added that the residents could be doing KAINGIN, thus the lava-like something in its crater.

Here’s more from GMA News.

At around 7 p.m. Saturday, Virgie Luvidece posted an inquiry asking, “Wala ba kayong update tungkol sa Taal volcano… sumasabog ito parang fountain.. maraming tourista ang kumukuha ng picture nito ngayon.”

Carlo Miguel Saavedra also posted a picture showing a sizable fire in or near one of the craters, saying that it was around 6:30 p.m. when the volcano “started to show some magma flow over the side.”

Solidum surmised that the glowing spots in the pictures might merely be local residents engaged in kaingin, or slash-and-burn clearing of slopes prior to planting, although he hastened to add that he has not seen the pictures yet.

Naku. Kaingin. Bad, bad.
